Dry cooling tower
A dry cooling tower (drycooler) is a heat exchanger equipped with fans for cooling the coolant that circulates in a closed loop. Cooling of the coolant in this device is due to the flow of ambient air forced by the fans. The dry cooler is designed for outdoor use and uses water with glycol as a heating medium to prevent freezing. From the cooling tower, the coolant enters the refrigeration system to cool components and mechanisms, and then returns to the dry cooler to remove the condensation heat to the atmosphere.
In addition to various industries, dry cooler is effectively used in conjunction with chillers in air conditioning systems in supermarkets and large industrial facilities. Drycoolers are installed on the roof of a building or on a special platform.
The use of dry coolers has several advantages. When using them, the evaporation of the coolant (water) does not occur, because it circulates in a closed loop and, therefore, it does not get dirty, does not require additional cleaning after cooling. Thanks to the addition of glycol, the entire circuit is protected from defrosting. The use of a dry cooling tower does not lead to chemical pollution and an increase in air humidity; they try to use it in places where great attention is paid to the environmental situation.

Drycoolers or dry coolers in air conditioning and refrigeration systems perform the function of cooling large quantities of liquid using ambient air. Drycoolers are universal equipment and are used to solve various production problems: industrial air conditioning, cooling of liquids and equipment elements in various technological processes, operation of gas turbines in areas with high ambient temperatures, oil and gas production and processing, electric power industry, etc. Air liquid coolers are designed to be built into the coolant circulation circuit of the cooling system and for outdoor installation. The drycooler cools the heat carrier by transferring heat to the ambient air, which is supplied by fans through the dry heat exchange surface. Dry cooling towers are equipped with axial or centrifugal fans, which perform the function of air flow.
Comparisons to wet cooling towers
In addition to drycoolers, there are also wet cooling towers and hybrid coolers. Dry coolers have a number of significant advantages over wet cooling towers. For example, wet cooling towers require constant monitoring of the level and quality of water in the sump, since water, in contact with the surrounding air, evaporates and accumulates dust, dirt, sand, fluff, insects, etc. These factors can significantly affect the efficiency of the equipment, the frequency of servicing and repair work. Dry cooling towers do not have the disadvantages described above, since the cooled liquid circulates inside the finned tubes.
